In order to start the timer, all you need to do is choose a project and hit the "Start button" on your main dialog.
You don't need to use the clients if you want to work on a project that's not assigned to any. Now you can see the timer running. Hit stop in order to stop the timer and with hitting stop a timestamp is created.
Tap on "Today" to view the created timestamp:
